Ampleforth College in detail

A True Community

The heart of Ampleforth lies in its warm and welcoming sense of community. Everyone belongs here, and the strengths of every student are celebrated. Rooted in 1,500 years of Benedictine tradition, the school still upholds the timeless values of respect, integrity, and responsibility. Yet Ampleforth is very much a modern school, open to families of all faiths. Pupils are taught to listen, to reflect, and to give something of themselves in service to others. With around 85% of students boarding, the sense of unity is strengthened further by shared experiences and daily life on campus.

Academics

Ampleforth offers an extensive and ambitious curriculum, with 22 GCSE subjects, 25 A-level options, and three BTEC vocational courses in the Sixth Form. Whether it’s Ancient Greek, Psychology, or Business Studies, pupils are encouraged to discover and nurture their interests. Beyond the classroom, the school runs an extensive enrichment programme of academic trips, guest lectures, theatre visits, and hands-on workshops. Pupils can also explore their passions through subject societies in science, sustainability, coding, or debating. At the centre of it all is the Learning Hub—an inviting space where pupils receive expert guidance and develop their confidence and curiosity.

Sport

Sporting excellence is a longstanding tradition at Ampleforth. The College is committed to helping every student achieve their potential, whether they arrive as seasoned athletes or total beginners. From Netball to Golf, Squash to Cross-Country, students are encouraged to take part and try something new. Talented sportsmen and women can apply for scholarships in Rugby, Hockey, Tennis, Cricket, Swimming, or Athletics. The school’s own High Performance Suite supports strength and conditioning for ambitious athletes. The setting allows for unique opportunities too; pupils can go horse riding, try archery, or head out kayaking in the local countryside.

Co-Curricular Life

The breadth of co-curricular opportunities is nothing short of remarkable. From Karate and Silversmithing to Wild Cooking and Eco-Engineering, there is something for everyone. A standout feature is the vehicle restoration group, where pupils learn to refurbish classic cars and even convert them to electric power. Societies range from Astronomy to Politics, and Sixth Formers keen to give back to the community can volunteer in local primary schools, charity shops, or care homes. Music is woven into the life of the school—pupils play, sing, perform, and attend concerts, all as part of the everyday rhythm of Ampleforth.

What Makes Akademis Stand Out?

  • We remain your trusted contact throughout your child’s stay, well beyond the placement process.
  • We provide support with guardianshipvisa applications and recognition of qualifications within the German school system.
  • We offer fully tailored advice. Our school recommendations are unique to each child and can run to 40 pages in length.
  • Families receive our 30+ page boarding school guide, packed with practical tips and insights.
  • We prepare your child thoroughly for entrance exams and interviews to maximise their chances of success.
  • We arrange school visits, ensuring you have the opportunity to experience each school first-hand.

Every boarding school has its own character and ethos. Having personally visited more than 100 schools, we understand these nuances. We also work with schools that do not pay commission, ensuring that our advice remains independent and always in the best interest of your child.

Our roots lie in the UK. For years, we have placed 200–300 families annually into British boarding schools. While our portfolio now includes schools beyond Britain, the UK remains at the heart of what we do.

Our tailored approach results in exceptional acceptance rates. For example, in 2022/23, all seven students we placed at the highly selective Malvern College received offers – a 100% success rate.

We arrange for prospective families to speak with our current students to hear first-hand accounts of life at a UK boarding school.
