Burgess Hill Girls has a remarkable history of success. Founded in 1906 by Miss Beatrice Goode at the request of local parents, Miss Goode and her sisters were determined to offer girls an education equal to that of boys. Today, the school continues to offer its students a safe, empowering environment in which to discover who they are, what they are capable of, and how to foster the drive to make turn their dreams into reality. Its motto — “I am, I can, I should, I will” — says it all.

Burgess Hill in Detail

A Strong Sense of Community

Community spirit and personal growth go hand in hand here. Every girl is encouraged to take on responsibilities and challenges beyond the classroom. To foster teamwork, Sixth Form students embark each year on a secret overnight trek at the edge of the South Downs National Park, hiking through the night to reach Beachy Head by sunrise — a unique and memorable way to bond and face an unusual challenge. Older pupils also mentor younger ones — as sports coaches, in charitable projects, and more — experiences which shape them into confident, positive young women with excellent interpersonal skills.

Performing Arts

The school’s performing arts programme is inspiring. Students work alongside professional make-up artists, set designers, and lighting technicians. Regular trips — such as a recent Hollywood experience including a VIP Oscars tour, visits to film sets at Warner Brothers and Universal Studios, and professional media and marketing workshops — are unforgettable highlights for theatre enthusiasts. The annual house production welcomes everyone, whether through writing scripts, composing songs, dancing, acting, or playing music. Choirs, orchestras, a jazz band, an African drumming group, and a wealth of other ensembles always welcome new members.

Academic Excellence

Academically, Burgess Hill Girls consistently ranks among the top independent schools in Sussex for GCSE and A-Level results. In 2022, an impressive 72% of GCSEs and 58% of A-Levels were graded A*/A, placing the school in the top 10% nationally. Alongside traditional subjects, students can choose from fashion, fine art, psychology, and design technology. The innovative BOLD programme equips girls with the skills they need to succeed in a rapidly changing world, ensuring they leave not only with outstanding academic results but also with confidence, interpersonal skills, and leadership qualities.

Enrichment and Activities

Burgess Hill Girls is passionate about nurturing every girl’s interests — evident in its extensive clubs and societies. From a creative writing group and the school newspaper to the thriving theatre club, scrapbooking, and Italian classes, there is something for everyone. The debating team is highly successful, and the Duke of Edinburgh Award, Young Enterprise, and Engineering in Education programmes give students invaluable life skills. LawSoc and MedSoc keep students informed about the latest developments in law and medicine, while sports such as Zumba, netball, tennis, polo, hockey, and athletics offer plenty of opportunities to stay active.

Conclusion Burgess Hill Girls

Burgess Hill Girls is a first-class, dynamic boarding school in an inspiring setting, offering a superb academic and creative education.

That said, it is by no means the only British boarding school with excellent academic and artistic opportunities. We recommend seeking personalised advice to find the school that best fits your child’s individual needs and aspirations. Please don’t hesitate to get in touch — our longstanding relationships with schools, authentic insights, and years of experience mean we can give you honest, informed guidance.

We are also happy to advise you on other boarding schools in England. You’ll find an overview on our Boarding Schools in England page.

Take advantage of:

  • our close connections with admissions offices
  • tailored interview preparation
  • many years of placement experience
  • first-hand, authentic insights

What Makes Akademis Stand Out?

  • We remain your trusted contact throughout your child’s stay, well beyond the placement process.
  • We provide support with guardianshipvisa applications and recognition of qualifications within the German school system.
  • We offer fully tailored advice. Our school recommendations are unique to each child and can run to 40 pages in length.
  • Families receive our 30+ page boarding school guide, packed with practical tips and insights.
  • We prepare your child thoroughly for entrance exams and interviews to maximise their chances of success.
  • We arrange school visits, ensuring you have the opportunity to experience each school first-hand.

Every boarding school has its own character and ethos. Having personally visited more than 100 schools, we understand these nuances. We also work with schools that do not pay commission, ensuring that our advice remains independent and always in the best interest of your child.

Our roots lie in the UK. For years, we have placed 200–300 families annually into British boarding schools. While our portfolio now includes schools beyond Britain, the UK remains at the heart of what we do.

Our tailored approach results in exceptional acceptance rates. For example, in 2022/23, all seven students we placed at the highly selective Malvern College received offers – a 100% success rate.

We arrange for prospective families to speak with our current students to hear first-hand accounts of life at a UK boarding school.
