Community lies at the heart of this large and vibrant school: over 90% of pupils live on site. Students from a wide variety of backgrounds come together in this diverse and inclusive environment, and music lovers, in particular, will feel at home here.

Founded in 1552 as a charitable institution under the patronage of King Edward VI, the school originally provided food, shelter, and education to poor children and orphans, giving them a pathway to a better future. Christ’s Hospital has remained true to this mission ever since, offering children from all walks of life a first-class education — including the internationally respected IB Diploma. Musicians receive particularly strong support here.

We are also captivated by the traditional school uniform: consisting of a long blue coat, distinctive yellow socks, and a white shirt with collar, it has barely changed in nearly 500 years. The classic red-brick buildings elegantly combine historic charm with modern functionality, and London is within easy reach – less than an hour away from the school’s very-own railway station.

Christ’s Hospital School in Detail

The Creative Arts

Music echoes through the halls of Christ’s Hospital on a daily basis. Each week, more than 550 music lessons are taught, including organ tuition. Up to 500 guests can enjoy drama, ballet, musicals, and opera performances in the newly refurbished theatre. Alongside the big band and concert band, the marching band is a signature feature: their musical procession to lunch is a cherished part of the weekly routine and a valued tradition. The band also regularly performs at the Lord Mayor’s Show in London. Artistic expression is equally encouraged. Students taking Art receive a starter pack of materials to enable creativity anywhere and at any time.

Boarding and Community

Day pupils are a rare exception at Christ’s Hospital, which fosters a strong sense of community through boarding. True to its charitable origins, the school offers generous bursaries, enabling a broad mix of students to access its excellent education. Only 22% of pupils pay the full fees. This dynamic diversity is one of the school’s greatest strengths. Not only do the vast majority of pupils live on campus, but so do many members of staff, contributing to a genuinely close-knit environment.

Academic Life

As a selective academic school, Christ’s Hospital boasts impressive results: in 2022, 53% of A-level students achieved the top A*/A grades. Students can choose between A-levels and the IB Diploma, with subject options ranging from Theology and Philosophy, Mandarin, and Sports Science. In the Sixth Form, pupils are encouraged to engage in a range of enrichment activities. All students also take part in the Learning for Life programme, which covers critical thinking, well-being, inclusivity, and financial literacy. Networking events and strong support during the university application process help pupils take their next steps with confidence.

Sport and Co-Curricular Activities

You won’t find undue pressure in the sports programme at Christ’s Hospital. Its Activity For Life programme is designed to foster a love of movement and lifelong engagement in sport. Whether for health and fitness, fun, or competitive training, there is something for everyone. True to its inclusive ethos, the school offers mixed boys’ and girls’ teams. Its charitable spirit also shines through in voluntary and community work. Beyond that, the school offers a wealth of clubs — from Arabic, astronomy, and fencing to knitting or board games (in French, no less). School trips reach across Europe, even as far as sailing in the Aegean Sea.

Fazit Christ’s Hospital School

Christ’s Hospital is a historic school with unique traditions and a very high proportion of boarders.

However, there are many other traditional boarding schools with strong communities. We encourage you to explore further options and would be delighted to advise you personally. Thanks to our long-standing relationships with schools, we can offer authentic insights into their individual character.

We are confident that together we can find the right school for your child.
On our Boarding Schools in England page, you can benefit from:

What Makes Akademis Stand Out?

  • We remain your trusted contact throughout your child’s stay, well beyond the placement process.
  • We provide support with guardianshipvisa applications and recognition of qualifications within the German school system.
  • We offer fully tailored advice. Our school recommendations are unique to each child and can run to 40 pages in length.
  • Families receive our 30+ page boarding school guide, packed with practical tips and insights.
  • We prepare your child thoroughly for entrance exams and interviews to maximise their chances of success.
  • We arrange school visits, ensuring you have the opportunity to experience each school first-hand.

Every boarding school has its own character and ethos. Having personally visited more than 100 schools, we understand these nuances. We also work with schools that do not pay commission, ensuring that our advice remains independent and always in the best interest of your child.

Our roots lie in the UK. For years, we have placed 200–300 families annually into British boarding schools. While our portfolio now includes schools beyond Britain, the UK remains at the heart of what we do.

Our tailored approach results in exceptional acceptance rates. For example, in 2022/23, all seven students we placed at the highly selective Malvern College received offers – a 100% success rate.

We arrange for prospective families to speak with our current students to hear first-hand accounts of life at a UK boarding school.
