An historic British atmosphere blended with a modern perspective. Musically gifted students will feel just as at home here as those with a passion for art or sport.

Classic, quintessentially British Lancing College sits close to the charming seaside town of Brighton, not far from its famous pebbled beach on the English Channel.

From a distance, you can already see the school thanks to its imposing, Gothic-style chapel with its soaring spires — a striking landmark. But this is far from the only architectural gem on its sprawling 550-acre campus.

Whether it’s languages (English, French, Italian, Latin, Mandarin, Russian, and Spanish), sciences, or technology: inspectors in a recent ISI report rated Lancing College as consistently excellent — a vibrant school that continually reinvents itself. Inspectors highlighted how strongly the school nurtures students’ ability to learn and think independently.
One department stands out in particular: music. Here, music truly unites the school community. All the arts are taught in a visually stunning Art school, and the sporting facilities are equally impressive.

Lancing College in detail

Music

Lancing’s music department is exceptional. From its renowned rock workshops to the choir’s remarkable Choral Evensong tours at some of Britain’s most beautiful cathedrals, the opportunities are outstanding. Every pupil has access to a full programme: three orchestras, two choirs, an A Cappella club, big band, symphonic wind band, rock workshops, conducting courses, improvisation sessions, composition lessons, and full chamber music coaching. The music school stages between 30 and 40 concerts a year — truly impressive. Even celebrated musicians regularly visit the school: most recently the Atalanta Piano Quartet, clarinettist Joseph Shiner, and pianist Ronan O’Hora.

Sport

Naturally, such a vast campus comes with fantastic pitches and facilities for a wide range of sports. There is even a dedicated riding stable for horse-lovers, and the school’s football team plays in the top league! Alongside hockey, netball, tennis, and cricket, these are the main sports — but the choice doesn’t stop there: swimming, fencing, cross-country, and sailing also enrich the programme. Boys and girls alike are encouraged to push themselves, whether competing nationally or simply for the joy of it. For the especially ambitious, tailored nutrition and training plans are available to help them reach their goals.

Academic Life

Students at Lancing show remarkable independence and initiative in their learning. Many go on to Oxford, Cambridge, and other top universities, pursuing degrees in everything from architecture, law, and medicine to drama, music, and fine art. The academic results speak for themselves: in 2022, an impressive 55% of A-level grades were A* or A.

The Arts

The visual and performing arts are just as strong here as music and sport. In an inspiring studio with views of the sea, students can let their creativity flow — sculpting, drawing, or printing to create truly impressive works of art. Regular workshops, such as those with talented ceramicist Sue Mundy, expose students to new techniques and stretch their creative skills. The school has its own theatre and drama studio — and, especially delightful, an open-air theatre on campus with 400 seats!

Our Visit

We were immediately struck by the sweeping landscapes and magnificent buildings of Lancing College. The beauty of the school, both inside and out, is simply breathtaking. A warm thank you to Admissions Manager Sarah Linfield, who gave us a fascinating interview. Although one might expect something more formal, the school exudes an incredibly welcoming atmosphere, and the students are open, friendly, and engaging.

In Summary

Lancing College is a musically vibrant, elite British boarding school where students enjoy a wonderfully stimulating environment, whatever their interests.

That said, Lancing is far from the only school in Britain with excellent musical and artistic opportunities. We encourage you to talk to us about your specific wishes and expectations. Thanks to our years of close contact with schools, we understand what makes each one unique and can offer authentic, informed advice. Together, we are confident we can find the right school for your child.

We are also happy to advise you on other boarding schools in England. You can find an overview on our Boarding Schools in England page.

Benefit from:

  • authentic, first-hand insights
  • our strong relationships with admissions offices
  • years of placement experience
  • guidance on visa questions

What Makes Akademis Stand Out?

  • We remain your trusted contact throughout your child’s stay, well beyond the placement process.
  • We provide support with guardianshipvisa applications and recognition of qualifications within the German school system.
  • We offer fully tailored advice. Our school recommendations are unique to each child and can run to 40 pages in length.
  • Families receive our 30+ page boarding school guide, packed with practical tips and insights.
  • We prepare your child thoroughly for entrance exams and interviews to maximise their chances of success.
  • We arrange school visits, ensuring you have the opportunity to experience each school first-hand.

Every boarding school has its own character and ethos. Having personally visited more than 100 schools, we understand these nuances. We also work with schools that do not pay commission, ensuring that our advice remains independent and always in the best interest of your child.

Our roots lie in the UK. For years, we have placed 200–300 families annually into British boarding schools. While our portfolio now includes schools beyond Britain, the UK remains at the heart of what we do.

Our tailored approach results in exceptional acceptance rates. For example, in 2022/23, all seven students we placed at the highly selective Malvern College received offers – a 100% success rate.

We arrange for prospective families to speak with our current students to hear first-hand accounts of life at a UK boarding school.
