St Christopher School – or “St Chris” as it’s fondly known – offers a peaceful, green campus and a holistic approach to education. It’s a place where creativity and sport flourish side by side.

Tucked away in a leafy corner of Letchworth Garden City, the school feels a world away from the hustle and bustle of city life. Wildlife is part of the scenery here – including the famous black squirrels of Letchworth. Yet the lively town centre is just a short walk away, complete with Art Deco cinema and theatre, parks, and excellent rail links to London and Cambridge.

St Christopher School in Detail

Focus on Art

We’ve rarely seen such an extensive academic offering in the arts. Students can choose from seven different A-Level pathways: Art, Craft and Design, Fine Art, Graphic Communication, Photography, Textiles, Ceramics and Jewellery, and Product Design. Creativity is also actively promoted beyond the classroom. There’s a 3D design club, an annual Recycled Fashion Show that draws students from across Hertfordshire, and the summer fair becomes a showcase for student work. In 2017, the school even hosted its own full-scale arts festival.

Sport

From sports fields and artificial pitches to an indoor pool, climbing wall, and tennis courts – St Chris is very well equipped. There’s even a school skate park. While traditional British sports such as football, rugby, netball and cricket are popular, students can also try their hand at kayaking, scuba diving, cross-country running and CrossFit. Cycling is encouraged too, with excellent local routes. The school runs its own swim school offering swimming lessons and water polo, and pupils regularly compete in matches and tournaments across various disciplines.

Academics

St Chris pupils go on to study at leading universities, including top art colleges like University of the Arts London – thanks in part to the school’s creative emphasis. Lessons take place in bright, airy classrooms, with specialist buildings such as the Sixth Form Centre, Drama and Dance Studio, and Design & Technology Centre. A wide range of A-Levels is available, including Business, Computer Science, Film Studies, PE, Drama, Spanish and Psychology. More recently, the school introduced the Level 3 Diploma in Food Science and Nutrition. In the Sixth Form, students benefit from a supportive tutor system offering tailored academic guidance.

Boarding

Boarding at St Chris takes place in two modern houses converted from historic buildings. They feature communal lounges, study spaces, a games room and shared kitchen. Social life is lively, with quiz nights, cooking sessions, film and pizza evenings all part of the weekend mix. Saturdays often include trips to London galleries and museums, Cambridge shopping days, or visits to the Harry Potter Studios. Other activities on offer include go-karting, ice skating, indoor skiing in Milton Keynes, and trampoline parks. Nearby towns Hitchin and Stevenage also offer plenty of shopping and leisure options.

Final Thoughts on St Christopher School, Letchworth

With its rural charm and holistic ethos, St Chris is a creative, inclusive school where students thrive – particularly those with interests in the arts or sport. There’s no uniform here and teachers are called by their first names – it is very egalitarian.

That said, St Christopher is just one of many excellent UK boarding schools offering a countryside setting and wide-ranging extracurricular options. We recommend a personal consultation to help match your child’s needs and aspirations with the right school.

Thanks to years of experience and close partnerships with admissions offices across the UK, we can offer genuine insight and guidance throughout the application journey – including visa advice and enrolment support.

We look forward to helping you find the perfect fit.

We’re also happy to advise you on other boarding schools in England. You’ll find an overview on our Boarding Schools in England page.

Why choose us?

• Years of experience placing students in UK schools
• Trusted relationships with admissions departments
• Help with visas and the application process
• Honest, personal advice tailored to your child’s profile

What Makes Akademis Stand Out?

  • We remain your trusted contact throughout your child’s stay, well beyond the placement process.
  • We provide support with guardianshipvisa applications and recognition of qualifications within your home country’s education system.
  • We offer fully tailored advice. Our school recommendations are unique to each child and can run to 40 pages in length.
  • Families receive our 30+ page boarding school guide, packed with practical tips and insights.
  • We prepare your child thoroughly for entrance exams and interviews to maximise their chances of success.
  • We arrange school visits, ensuring you have the opportunity to experience each school first-hand.

Every boarding school has its own character and ethos. Having personally visited more than 100 schools, we understand these nuances. We also work with schools that do not pay commission, ensuring that our advice remains independent and always in the best interest of your child.

Our roots lie in the UK. For years, we have placed 200–300 families annually into British boarding schools. While our portfolio now includes schools beyond Britain, the UK remains at the heart of what we do.

Our tailored approach results in exceptional acceptance rates. For example, in 2022/23, all seven students we placed at the highly selective Malvern College received offers – a 100% success rate.

We arrange for prospective families to speak with our current students to hear first-hand accounts of life at a UK boarding school.
