Uppingham School strives for excellence across the board – whether in academics, sport, music, art, or drama. Pupils enjoy access to world-class, cutting-edge facilities in every area.
Set in the charming market town of Uppingham, east of Birmingham, this historic school has long held its place among the leading names in British boarding education. Since its foundation in 1584, Uppingham has been committed to delivering rigorous, forward-thinking education while constantly reinvesting and reinventing itself.
Today, its impressive campus spills across various parts of the town and includes a newly built Science Centre, no fewer than 15 boarding houses, and a lively, full-time residential community. At its heart stand the school’s striking historic buildings – a gothic chapel, clocktower, and quintessentially Victorian architecture – reminders of its distinguished past.
Uppingham welcomes curious young minds from over 35 countries and encourages them to think independently and meet the challenges of modern life with confidence.

Academic Excellence
The demanding curriculum offers 26 A-Level subjects, ranging from Ancient History to Drama to Politics. Subject-focused trips, from theatre tours in New York to business expeditions in Shanghai, bring learning vividly to life. Budding scientists will be drawn to the showstopping Science Centre, complete with airy classrooms, rooftop terrace, and a magnificent spiral staircase. Shortlisted for the prestigious Stirling Prize, the building epitomises Uppingham’s commitment to innovation. In this energising academic environment, ambitious students flourish and the results speak volumes: in 2022, an impressive 64% of A-Level grades were A* or A. Careers and university preparation are expertly handled, ensuring students step seamlessly into life after school.
Sport
Uppingham’s sprawling 25-hectare site features 39 tennis courts, versatile astroturf pitches, a full sports centre, fitness suites, a 25-metre pool, and two dance studios; plenty to inspire a love of movement and fair play. The focus here is on participation, teamwork, and joy – and out of that mindset, excellence naturally follows. The school is particularly renowned for hockey, fielding 31 teams and regularly reaching national finals.
Creative Arts
Uppingham proudly offers what many regard as the finest music programme of any non-specialist school. With three music schools, high-tech rehearsal spaces, and acclaimed guest artists offering masterclasses and workshops, musical life is vibrant and thriving. It even includes organ tuition, with accreditation from the Royal College of Organists, and standout performance opportunities in venues like the Royal Albert Hall. Budding actors take to the stage in the school’s own proscenium-arch theatre, while the award-winning Leonardo Centre houses exceptional facilities for 3D printing, sculpture, fashion design, and more – a creative hub where students’ talents truly come alive.
Co-Curricular Life
We were especially impressed by the pupils’ commitment to community outreach. Uppingham’s Make a Differenceprogramme empowers students to engage in meaningful voluntary work – from hospital courier shifts to offering music lessons to local children. There’s a strong sense of social responsibility that runs through the school. Alongside this, students enjoy a rich social life, with regular barbecues, concerts, cooking contests, cinema nights and more. Sixth Formers benefit from their own dedicated space – the Thring Centre – where they can unwind, meet friends and enjoy a more adult-style community setting.
